South African Carbon Credits are a type of environmental commodity that can be used to offset a Carbon Tax liability. The South African Government implemented a Carbon Tax in June 2019 under a compliance market. Envisioned in three stages that gradually phase in the tax, companies are able to offset between 5-10% of their tax liability with eligible carbon credits using the Carbon Offset Administration System (COAS). COAS-eligible carbon credits represent 1 tonne of Carbon Dioxide emissions and trade at a discount to the current year's tax rate.

Renewable Energy Certificates (RECS) are tradable certificates that represent the environmental and renewable attributes associated with one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from renewable sources. RECs provide a way to track and verify the production and use of renewable energy. REC's are becoming increasingly popular as countries start introducing cross-border adjustment mechanisms - where imports are taxed based on their sustainability portfolio. RECs can generally only be used in the same region where they are created.

Voluntary Carbon Credits are a type of environmental commodity used to represent a reduction or removal of one metric ton of Carbon Dioxide emissions. Voluntary carbon credits are purchased by individuals, companies and organisations for voluntary use, rather than to comply with legally binding emissions reduction obligations. Voluntary Carbon Credits can be purchased internationally and are generally used for ESG reporting as well as contributing towards net-zero targets.
